The Harare rainy season is a gift and a test for every garden. Downpours feed growth spectacularly – but they also cause erosion, fungal disease, waterlogging and chaos in unprepared beds. These practical tips help your garden thrive through the rains instead of merely surviving them.

1. Get Drainage Right First

Water that sits around roots kills plants and undermines paving. Ensure beds are raised or graded, paths have falls, and waterlogged corners are corrected with drainage or redirection. This is the single most valuable pre-rain investment you can make – more in our garden renovation guide.

2. Plant Before the Rains, Not During

New plantings establish best when in the ground just before consistent rains begin. Species like salvias, verbenas, bougainvillea and many indigenous shrubs take off in the wet season. See the seasonal planting guide for timing.

3. Mulch to Protect Beds

A 5-8cm mulch layer prevents rain from splashing soil (and fungal spores) onto leaves, suppresses weeds and keeps roots cool. Keep mulch away from plant stems to avoid rot.

4. Watch for Fungal Disease

Warm, wet conditions breed black spot, mildew and rust. Improve air circulation by pruning, water at soil level rather than overhead, and remove affected material promptly – never compost it.

5. Protect Lawns From Compaction

Stay off wet lawns – compaction from foot traffic on soggy ground sets back recovery by weeks. Sharp drainage prevents the worst problems.

6. Adjust Your Irrigation

Smart controllers and rain sensors stop automatic watering during wet spells, saving plants from overwatering and you from wasted water. Our irrigation team can retrofit rain sensors easily.

7. Prep for the Dry Season Early

As rains taper, plan dry-season protection: deep watering schedules, tree care and drought-tolerant replacements for tired annuals. Gardens designed with seasonal planning move smoothly between seasons.
