Outdoor lighting should make your home safer – not create new risks. Faulty installations, wrong fixtures and careless placement are surprisingly common, and Harare weather (heavy rain, heat, lightning) tests every installation. These safety tips help you enjoy your garden lighting with complete peace of mind.

1. Use Only Weatherproof Outdoor-Rated Fittings

Indoor fittings used outdoors are a genuine shock and fire hazard. Look for proper IP ratings: IP65 or higher for areas exposed to rain, IP44 minimum for sheltered spots. Quality outdoor lighting installations use only rated fixtures, connectors and junction boxes.

2. Keep Low-Voltage Systems Low-Voltage

12V systems are inherently safer around people and water – but only if the transformer is correctly sized and the cable gauge prevents voltage drop. Undersized cables overheat; overloaded transformers fail. Professional design prevents both.

3. Protect Cables From Damage

Buried cables should be at safe depth, in conduit where exposed, and clearly mapped before any future digging. Above-ground cables must be secured away from mowers, trimmers and foot traffic.

4. Install Proper Earth Leakage Protection

All outdoor circuits should be protected by a suitable earth leakage breaker. If your outdoor lights share an indoor circuit without protection, have a qualified electrician correct this before anything else.

5. Position Lights to Prevent Glare and Trips

Poorly aimed lights blind instead of illuminating. Step lights, path edging and handrail lighting prevent trips on stairs and level changes – the most common garden injuries. Uplights should not shine into neighbouring properties or roads.

6. Consider Security Lighting Wisely

Motion-sensor lights deter intruders, but constant glare creates shadows and annoys neighbours. Balanced approaches combine steady low-level lighting with motion-activated security heads at entry points – camera-friendly placement included.

7. Maintain Regularly

Check fittings seasonally for water ingress, corroded connections, exposed cable and failing bulbs. Trimming plants away from fixtures prevents heat buildup and fire risk in dry months.
